More good news on the solar panels! This week we received our 3 monthly electricity account, the lowest ever! Only $35 to pay. The main factor was the increase in the payment from Origen to buy back the power we produce. We used to receive $12.50 /Kw hr (same as our cost of power from the grid). Now however for the power we return to the grid instead of $12.50 we receive a cool $20/Kw hr. It sounds very much more impressive to other people who are also considering installing solar panels, but are reluctant due to the high cost. Our goal is to pay nothing for our electricity, maybe next bill, with the summer sun and more diligence turning off the switches for appliances that we at not really using, maybe we can do it!

This is a link to an article about how Germany is leading the way in renewable's.

Living in the city, I also love our 12 BP Solar 80 watt photovoltaic laminates which are able to feed excess power into the grid, giving us credits on very sunny days and have the advantage of no messy batteries. However it is also very easy to be extravagant with energy usage as their is always power at the flick of a switch. We do get feedback when the bill arrives though and it is a great feeling when we have been almost self sufficient in energy use for the preceding months (only happens in summer though).
I have just returned from Germany today and although the weather there is often grey and grim on my many train trips I saw in some villages nearly every roof was covered in solar panels. I also read in the newspaper there that Germany has reached their Kyoto agreement target a year before scheduled (this was partly due to the unusually warm winter and lower heating needs, but at least a big effort is also being made). It is very exciting to see a government and their citizens really trying make bigs changes to their energy production and consumption.

Great Blog! Will be interesting to see how the solar goes, particulalry in semi-shade.

Have just bought my first house in Fernleigh, and am interested in slowly converting to the permaculture ethic. Starting one by one with solar hot water, then pv's etc. Oh .. and I slao bought a motorbike to reduce fuel useage!
